Caroline Goyder is a U.K.-based renowned voice teacher and communication expert. Her new book is
It must be said that Caroline Goyder has a way with words! Her new book makes you want to listen to her in person for she writes with polished expertise. I love instructional books that not just tell you the steps in a system, and how to achieve them but while reading, you experience the process. In Find Your Voice: The Secret to Talking with Confidence in Any Situation Goyder does exactly that.
Find Your Voice: The Secret to Talking with Confidence in Any Situation nurtures confidence from the very opening pages. Approaching voice as almost sacred by emphasizing how your voice is your essence, Goyder gets our attention. Comparing our voices to a guitar, Goyder explains the basics of how our voice works using simple diagrams, emphasizing that voice is breath and we can control it. The more control we have, the more confidence we have. I like this quote that she includes.
“We breathe out to speak. We breathe in to gather our thoughts. We refuel on pauses.”
Her discourse on ‘shaping’ the sound in order for our voices to be more expressive is fascinating. She even gives an exercise for speaking with clarity.
Find Your Voice: The Secret to Talking with Confidence in Any Situation instructs us on what to do about our insecurities when we must speak before an audience. Why speaking in front of an large congregations of people causes fear, how it affects our voices and what we can do about it by finding our calm center and actually embracing the spotlight rather than cringing from it. Goyder’s book examines not only the obvious reactions to threats that might make us nervous when speaking, but also discusses the chemical reactions our body goes through when it is under stress or threat. Her instructions on how to embody confidence, and how to use your individual voice fully are invaluable in this day of digital communication. Goyder has a FAQ section after each chapter, questions that she says ‘real people’ have asked her. Her explanations are clear, precise and always encouraging. She has exercises in each chapter that, when doing them just a few minutes a day, will aid us in speaking.

Goyder’s expertise comes from her experience with many professional broadcasters, celebrities and motivational speakers and this book is a clear demonstration of why so many seek her out. Find Your Voice: The Secret to Talking with Confidence in Any Situation is comprehensive to the education she offers and, as she suggests, is worth taking time not just to read but to study, make notes, try the exercises, and repeat. I highly recommend this book for those needed confidence in speaking to groups either online or in person.
