Joseph Contorer, MA LMFT
Author of You’ve Been Blocked, The Search for Gay Male Perfection
Joseph Contorer, MA LMFT, is a psychotherapist, author, and former health educator who has assisted clients, particularly gay men, with elevating their self-acceptance, improving relationships, and managing depression, anxiety, and compulsive behaviors/addictions. Originally from Portland, OR, Joseph worked in southern California with his office in the West Hollywood area. Many years of educational, professional and personal influence contributed to what eventually became the book.

You’ve Been Blocked, The Search for Gay Male Perfection is a sometimes-controversial discussion that embraces critical thinking; the content provides constructive criticism about how gay men are commonly inhibited or blocked from being their naturally true selves, beginning as young children. Gay men searching for idealized perfection in the GMC is likely a byproduct from years of feeling pressure to make things look a certain way and to be perceived and act a certain (“straight-normal”) way.
“The M-Ranking” is described as a stringent rating system used by some gay men to superficially evaluate themselves and others. Earlier learned messages from childhood contribute to a prioritization on masculinity, model-looks and ironically, non-gayness or “straight-passing” capability. Unblocking occurs after a fundamental individual shift of focus that maximizes internal satisfaction, rather than clamoring for external approval. Systemic change in the GMC will be a pleasant surprise based on a collective impact of individual gay men cultivating more authentic interactions with others in all communities.
